Solar Activity Surge Could Bring Rare Auroral Displays to Poland – Time is Running Out
A notable surge in solar activity, the highest since June,is underway as active region 4274 emerges on the Sun. This region has already unleashed two X-class flares and two M-class flares in recent days, sending a stream of charged particles – a coronal mass ejection (CME) – toward Earth.
The arrival of this solar wind could trigger a G3-class geomagnetic storm in Earth’s upper atmosphere, potentially resulting in a visible aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, over Poland. This would be a rare spectacle, not seen in such prominence for six years.
As the Sun rotates, active region 4274 is moving toward a position directly facing Earth. This alignment is expected to increase the likelihood of further auroral activity in the coming week.
Currently, NOAA forecasts heightened auroral activity through Saturday, November 8. Observers are advised to monitor the solar wind parameters and scan the northern horizon between evening and early morning.
The northern lights are a fleeting phenomenon, appearing and disappearing rapidly. Optimal viewing requires escaping urban light pollution and finding a dark location. Longer nights and clear skies – predicted over most of Poland until Saturday – will further enhance observation opportunities.
