Social Media Restrictions for Minors: Instagram’s New Safety Feature & AI Alerts

Instagram has begun notifying parents in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada when its adolescent users repeatedly search for content related to suicide or self-harm. The feature, launched by Meta Platforms, delivers alerts via email, SMS, WhatsApp, or in-app notifications, alongside resources for parents seeking to support their children.

This marks the first instance of a social media platform proactively alerting families to potentially concerning search activity. Previously, platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Snapchat primarily focused on blocking specific searches or providing access to support resources without directly involving parents, according to reports.

The move comes as governments worldwide grapple with regulating social media access for minors. Australia introduced a ban on social media for those under 16 in December, while France’s National Assembly recently approved legislation prohibiting platform use for individuals under 15. Similar debates are underway in Italy, with proposed laws aiming to restrict access for younger users.

Meta is also extending these alert systems to interactions with its AI chatbot, Meta AI, notifying parents if their children engage in conversations about sensitive topics. This expansion follows mounting legal challenges in the United States against AI companies, alleging the creation of chatbots potentially harmful to young people.

According to a report from November 22, 2022, Adrien Rabiot, a midfielder for Juventus, played a key role in France’s 4-1 victory over Australia in the World Cup, scoring a goal and providing an assist. While not directly related to the current developments regarding Instagram’s safety features, the game highlighted the presence of young players within the French national team, a demographic increasingly targeted by social media platforms.

During that same match, France’s coach, Didier Deschamps, opted not to risk Raphael Varane, who was recovering from a muscle injury. The team fielded Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konaté as central defenders, and relied on Kylian Mbappé as a key offensive player. The game also saw Craig Goodwin score for Australia early in the first half.

The French team’s formation included Lloris, Pavard, Konaté, Upamecano, Lucas Hernandez, Tchouaméni, Rabiot, Dembélé, Griezmann, Mbappé, and Giroud. Australia’s lineup featured Ryan, Atkinson, Souttar, Rowles, Behich, McGree, Mooy, Irvine, Leckie, Duke, and Goodwin.

The implementation of Instagram’s fresh notification system is expected to extend to Italy later this year. Meta has not yet announced a specific timeline for the rollout.
