Snapchat Introduces Infinite Chat History & Collaborative Streaks
Snapchat has rolled out two new features – infinite Retention and Group streaks – offering users greater control over message permanence and a more flexible way to maintain streaks with friends. The updates, widely available after initial testing in 2024,respond directly to user feedback, according to the company.
Infinite Retention allows users to opt-in to saving chat history indefinitely, moving away from Snapchat’s original ephemeral messaging model where messages disappeared after viewing. Both users in a conversation are notified when Infinite Retention is enabled, and either participant can disable it at any time. Previously, conversations only remained visible unless manually saved.
Alongside Infinite Retention,Snapchat has launched a new format for Group Streaks. This allows all members of a group chat to contribute to maintaining a shared streak, rather than relying on individual daily snaps between two users. participation in Group Streaks is optional and private, and streaks can be restored within a week if broken.
Snapchat emphasizes that these changes are designed to provide users with more flexibility and personalization. Infinite Retention offers a balance between temporary and permanent conversations, while Group Streaks reduce the pressure on any single individual to maintain a streak within a group. The company highlights clarity through notifications and per-chat management options, as well as a restoration window for broken Group Streaks, to ensure user control.
