Snapchat to Charge for Memories Storage Starting September 2025
Snap Inc. will introduce paid storage plans for its Memories feature in September 2025, ending unlimited free storage for user photos and videos. The change comes as the platform grapples with the escalating costs of maintaining over one billion stored memories.
Launched in 2016, Snapchat Memories allowed users to save content directly within the app without utilizing device storage. Now, Snap Inc. is implementing a tiered system to address both user demand and the financial burden of maintaining such a vast data volume. The new system offers a free tier of 5 GB, followed by three subscription options: a basic plan (100 GB for $1.99/month), Snapchat+ (250 GB for $3.99/month), and a Platinum Plan (5 TB for $15.99/month) geared towards creators and heavy users.
Users who exceed the 5 GB free limit without subscribing to a plan will have a grace period of up to 12 months to download or migrate their memories, before access is removed. This provides a window to upgrade storage or save content elsewhere. The move reflects a broader trend of users seeking to preserve digital memories, which have become integral to personal identity in the digital age.
