DUBAI - Snapchat is changing its policy on saved content, announcing it will begin charging users for storage exceeding 5GB within its “memories” feature. The move marks a shift from the previously free service for archiving snaps and stories.
The company detailed the new ”memories storage plans” in a recent blog post, targeting users who have accumulated notable amounts of data. Snapchat emphasized that the vast majority of its user base will not be affected by these changes.
“For the vast majority of Snapchatters, who have less than 5GB of Memories, nothing will change,” Snapchat stated. “Users with larger data needs can upgrade their storage to retain content in the feature introduced in 2016.”
Storage Options and Pricing
Snapchat is offering tiered storage plans: 100GB, 250GB (included with a Snapchat+ subscription), and 5TB with Snapchat Platinum. While the full pricing structure wasn’t initially disclosed, a spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the 100GB plan will cost $1.99 per month. The 250GB option is bundled within the existing $3.99 monthly Snapchat+ subscription.
The company acknowledged the potential user frustration with transitioning from a free service to a paid one, stating that the value of the paid service “is worth the cost.”
“These changes will allow us to continue to invest in making Memories better for our entire community,” Snapchat added.
As the launch of “Memories” in 2016, Snapchat users have collectively stored over 1 trillion photos and videos, highlighting the feature’s popularity and the growing need for expanded storage solutions.
What Happens If You Exceed the Limit?
Users who surpass the 5GB limit will be granted 12 months of temporary storage to access their content. Snapchat also provides the option to download saved memories directly to personal devices for permanent storage.
