Groningen took center stage on the popular quiz show De Slimste Mens this past Tuesday, but one contestant’s unfamiliarity with local icons sparked amusement and a moment of recognition for viewers. The episode, the second of the new season hosted by Herman van der Zandt with Paulien Cornelisse providing expert commentary, featured a ”Gallerij” round centered around the province.
The segment highlighted quintessential Groningen imagery-Arjen robben, the regional flag, eierballen (a local snack), the student society Vindicat, and the statue of Peerd van Ome Loeks-testing contestants’ knowledge of the area. Actress Sophie van Winden struggled with several of the clues, revealing a gap in her familiarity with Groningen’s cultural touchstones.
When presented with a photo of famed footballer Arjen Robben, Van Winden admitted she didn’t recognize him, passing on the question. Similarly, the Groningse flag failed to trigger a response. “Football? Pass,” she stated.Confusion continued when eierballen appeared on screen. “Are these snacks?” Van Winden inquired. “stuffed eggs? Russian eggs? No. Pass.”
Further challenges arose with a picture of the Vindicat building.”Vides Atque Polit?” she questioned, then offered, “Trust? Pass.” A map of the region prompted guesses of “Belarus? Croatia?” before she ultimately passed.
Recognition finally dawned with images of Ter Apel, the Martinitoren (Martini Tower), and Bert Visscher, demonstrating some familiarity with Groningen landmarks. The episode underscores the diverse range of knowledge tested on De Slimste Mens and highlights the regional pride associated with Groningen’s unique identity.
