Skidmore Freshman Claims First ITA Regional Singles Title in Seven Years
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Skidmore College freshman Ginevra Muratori secured the ITA Northeast Regional Singles Championship title on Sunday, marking the program’s first singles champion as 2018. Muratori’s victory, coupled wiht a strong showing from her and teammate Amelie Gonzalez in doubles play, highlighted a accomplished hosting of the regional tournament for the thoroughbreds.
The championship run underscores a promising start to the season for Skidmore’s women’s tennis team and earns Muratori an automatic berth into next month’s ITA Cup tournament. this regional success positions the Thoroughbreds favorably as they head into the remainder of their fall schedule and the spring dual match season.
Muratori reached the championship match after a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory over RPI’s Kaaviya Kannan in the semifinals. She then defeated NYU’s Victoria Wang 6-4, 6-2 to claim the singles title. Throughout the tournament,Muratori consistently overcame higher-seeded opponents,demonstrating her skill and competitive drive.
In doubles competition, Muratori and Gonzalez advanced to the championship match with an 8-5 semifinal win against NYU’s Kast and Bondarenko, also securing their place in the ITA Cup tournament. The duo faced a tough challenge from RPI’s Jaiswal and Ridenour in the final, ultimately falling 8-3 despite a strong start.
Skidmore will continue its fall season with a dual match against Union on Thursday at 6:30 PM at the McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center.
