Sixers Partner With Kalshi as First NBA Team to Join Prediction Market
The Philadelphia 76ers are becoming the first team in the NBA to partner with the prediction market Kalshi, following a broader league-level agreement struck earlier in the week, inquirer.com reported.
How the Kalshi Partnership Operates
Launched in 2021, Kalshi functions as a federally regulated prediction market rather than a traditional sportsbook. Users trade “Yes” or “No” contracts on the outcomes of real-world events, including sports games, elections, and entertainment programs, trading directly against other users rather than against “the house.”
The agreement between the NBA and major prediction markets grants companies like Kalshi the right to use league logos, official data, and advertising space during broadcasts, while giving the league oversight on the specific markets offered. The Sixers already maintain a partnership with sportsbook BetMGM.
Lebron, sponsored by Polymarket, now plays for a team with a Kalshi partnership.
NBA Restricts Wagering Amid Gambling Scandals
The partnership arrives as regulators and the public scrutinize sports betting and prediction markets across professional sports. Former NBA player Jontay Porter received a lifetime ban from the league for involvement in a gambling scheme, while Malik Beasley recently pleaded guilty in a separate case. In response, the NBA directed sportsbooks to restrict wagering on opening tips, specific player missed shots, and under bets for players projected to play fewer than 12 minutes.
Additional controversy surfaced earlier this year when FanDuel sent a personalized video featuring Bryce Harper to a VIP bettor experiencing a gambling addiction. Harper stated he had no partnership with the company and recorded the message through the Cameo platform without knowledge of the customer’s addiction. Concurrently, LeBron James faced questions for partnering with Polymarket, another prominent prediction market, and the NFL required Eagles running back Saquon Barkley to divest his equity stake in Polymarket, as the NFL prohibits players from investing in or endorsing gambling or prediction market entities.
When asked about fan apprehension regarding the Sixers aligning with Kalshi, team Chief Revenue Officer Owen Morin pointed to league safeguards. “It really stressed, I think, all of our collective goals, not only the Sixers, the NBA, Kalshi’s, and others, of really protecting the integrity of the game,” Morin said, as reported by inquirer.com. “The NBA has made that obviously a key priority. That’s obviously a focus of ours as well. We know Kalshi believes in it, and so you know, we want to do this in a really safe way, and we believe it’s regulated in a way where the integrity is upheld.”
Kalshi Funds Rides and Promotions for Sixers Fans
As part of the launch, Kalshi will fund postgame SEPTA rides for fans attending Friday’s game against the New York Knicks. The collaboration will also feature fan engagement initiatives, including a poster series created by local artists and digital opportunities for Kalshi customers to win free merchandise and concessions through the Sixers mobile app.
“We found a lot of alignment on fan-engaging promotions,” Morin said, according to inquirer.com. “They wanted to come in and do some pretty cool stuff that’s going to hit not only fans in the arena but fans in Philadelphia in general, so I would say that shared commitment to engaging our fans in the city.”
