Six Nations Fallow Weeks: 2026 Changes & Player Welfare Concerns

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

The 2026 Six Nations Championship will spot a condensed schedule with a single fallow week, a change from the two breaks built into the tournament in recent years. The alteration, partly driven by the introduction of the new Nations Championship in November 2026, means the entire competition will be completed in just over five weeks.

The traditional fallow weeks, which have been a feature of the Six Nations for decades, provide a break in the intense schedule of Test matches. During these weeks, domestic leagues such as the United Rugby Championship and France’s Top 14 resume play. The Gallagher Premiership, with its reduced number of teams, can afford a full hiatus during the Six Nations, though the Premiership Rugby Cup continues.

The upcoming fallow week in 2026 will run from February 28th to March 1st, with the tournament resuming on Friday, March 6th, when Ireland host Wales in Dublin. While some national coaches may allow players to return to their clubs for game time during the break, teams too commonly utilize the period for three days of international camp training before granting players time with family, and friends.

The structure of fallow weeks has evolved over time. When Italy joined the Six Nations in 2000, a fallow week followed each round of fixtures, extending the championship into early April. This mirrored the format of the previous Five Nations, where teams often faced four-week gaps between matches due to the odd number of participants. From 2003 to 2025, a 2-1-2 format – two fallow weeks – was standard.

The shift to a single fallow week in 2026 is intended to create a more compact and “media-friendly” tournament, as well as freeing up an international weekend for the inaugural Nations Championship. Though, the compressed schedule is likely to raise concerns about player welfare, with teams potentially playing three Test matches within a fortnight. This increased physical demand, particularly when combined with short turnarounds between Saturday and Sunday matches, presents a challenge for coaches and squad depth.

Ireland will begin their campaign against Wales on March 6th, following the fallow week. Meanwhile, France will face Italy in a separate match as part of the 2026 Six Nations schedule. France’s players are currently preparing for their Grand Slam quest, according to reports.
