“We are just learning details of the horrific mass shooting in Krakow, a savage and murderous attack that’s shattered the peace of Poland,” U.S. Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose wrote on X as the country entered two days of national mourning following a gunman’s assault on the city’s historic main market square on November 7, 2026.

Poland Begins Official Mourning as Capital Boosts Security

Poland marked the start of two days of official mourning as investigators worked to piece together the motives behind the attack. In Krakow, mourners gathered at multiple locations to leave candles. The traditional trumpet call from St Mary’s church was suspended for 12 hours, the first time since 1939.

In Warsaw, police increased security measures in busy areas popular with tourists. Barriers were installed on streets leading to Krakowskie Przedmiescie in the historic heart of the capital. Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski announced increased security measures, including road barriers, along main streets in the old town.

Gunman Held Far-Right Views Before Deadly Shooting

The interior minister described the suspect as inspired by far-right ideologies. Police said the gunman acted alone, wearing military-style fatigues and using a military-type long gun while driving through the square and firing at random. He held radical, ultra-nationalistic views and was fascinated with far-right ideologies. Ammunition and multiple weapon parts were recovered from his vehicle.

The bodies of three individuals were later discovered in an apartment in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski. Local police confirmed via X that officers discovered three bodies inside a residential apartment: a 53-year-old man, a 52-year-old woman, and a 21-year-old woman, identified as the suspect’s parents and sister.

Newspaper Editorial Marks Brutal End to Era of Safety

The daily newspaper Rzeczpospolita noted in an editorial that the mass shooting brought a brutal end to an era where Poland felt like an island of safety.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk singled out Senior Constable Jakub Kulik and Senior Constable Artur Moranski on social media, calling them true heroes who risked their lives to save others. Police issued urgent appeals for blood donations as one of the wounded officers fought for his life in hospital.
