Singapore’s Legal Landscape: Rule of Law, AI, and International Interests
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong addressed the SGLaw200 Youth Forum on May 13, 2026, marking the first major event in a series of celebrations for the 200th anniversary of Singapore’s legal system.
During the forum, Prime Minister Wong observed that while young Singaporeans frequently prioritize discussions on inequality, mental health, and climate change, the Rule of Law often remains an invisible but essential foundation of daily life. He cited the ability to walk home safely at night, the confidence to sign contracts, and the expectation of fair treatment regardless of background as practical manifestations of a functioning legal system.
Edwin Tong stated that the Rule of Law serves to boost Singapore’s social fabric. He emphasized that This proves the government’s responsibility to ensure that laws reflect the prevailing social values of the community.
International Law and National Interest
Prime Minister Wong framed the adherence to international law as a critical matter of national interest, particularly for small states. He specifically identified strong international sea laws as vital for the security and stability of nations like Singapore.

Legal Frameworks and Artificial Intelligence
The Prime Minister also addressed the intersection of technology and jurisprudence, stating that the age of artificial intelligence requires a reconsideration of established assumptions regarding legal responsibility. He indicated that the evolution of AI necessitates a rethink of how legal liability and accountability are assigned.
The SGLaw200 Youth Forum was organized by the Ministry of Law and the Institute of Policy Studies to provide a space for young people to examine the meaning of the Rule of Law for the future of society. The government is now proceeding with further events to mark the bicentenary of the legal system.
