Choral Singing: A Prescription for Health and Happiness,New Study Suggests
Stockholm,Sweden – Forget the gym,a growing body of evidence suggests a joyful choice for boosting both physical and mental wellbeing: choral singing. From traditional church choirs to inclusive “everyone can sing” groups, thousands of choirs across Sweden are offering a unique pathway to health and community, particularly for seniors.
The tradition of communal singing dates back to the 19th century, initially as a means of fostering peace and togetherness. Today, its benefits are being recognized as far more profound. “In the choir, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, you are a cog in a big musical body,” explains karin Eklundh, highlighting the inclusive nature of the activity. This sense of belonging, she says, is a key factor in choral singing’s enduring popularity in Sweden.
Beyond the musical enjoyment, choral singing provides meaningful social benefits. Regular rehearsals and performances create a strong sense of community, combating loneliness and fostering meaningful connections. The feeling of belonging is crucial for maintaining a sense of purpose and meaning in life, especially during retirement.
Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of joining a choir is the complete lack of prerequisites.”There is a large selection of choirs that invite everyone to sing, with no requirement for either a ‘good’ singing voice or practicality,” Eklundh emphasizes. “The beauty of choir life is precisely this, that it has a wide range.” She adds with conviction, “Singing is a human right, we usually say.”
