HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - A dominant performance by senior guard Simone Sawyer propelled the University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team to a 67-55 victory over Hofstra on Saturday at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Sawyer’s all-around excellence comes at a crucial moment for the Quakers, who were seeking a bounce-back win after a difficult road loss earlier in the week.
Sawyer, a lincolnshire, Ill. native, led all scorers with 21 points and added nine rebounds while anchoring a Penn defense that effectively neutralized Hofstra’s key offensive threats in the second half. The win improves Penn’s record to 3-1 on the young season, while Hofstra falls to 1-2.
“This was the best basketball game we’ve seen a guard at Penn play in a long time. Simone Sawyer was that good,” Penn coach mike McLaughlin told Ivy hoops Online immediately after the game. “She defended 94 feet almost the entire time, she guarded their point of attack. A great effort.”
The Quakers’ victory marks a return to form following a challenging 68-54 loss at Drexel on November 13th.
