Veteran Siegemund Stuns rising Star Andrejewa, Reaches Wuhan Round of 16
Wuhan, China – Laura Siegemund pulled off a notable upset at the WTA 1000 Wuhan tournament today, defeating the favored Russian Mirra Andrejewa 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the round of 16. The 37-year-old German’s victory marks a notable achievement against a rapidly rising player in women’s tennis and demonstrates her continued competitive edge.

“I think she made a few too many mistakes. I was able to benefit from that. I wanted to play solidly,” Siegemund said after the match. “Of course I’m super happy. Given the conditions here over the last few days,I never thought I would survive. But I’m glad that I stayed focused.”
The match saw Siegemund repeatedly pressure the 18-year-old Andrejewa, forcing errors despite dropping the first set in a tiebreak after fending off two set points at 4-5. Siegemund rebounded strongly, leveling the match after 2 hours and 11 minutes before securing an early break in the deciding set, ultimately taking a 3-0 lead and holding off four break points to close out the victory.
