Sibahle Sifo scales Eastern Cape cabbage enterprise
Sibahle Sifo grew up determined to escape the soil, yet now manages an Eastern Cape agricultural enterprise supplying commercial retailers including Spar, Food For Mzansi reported. Born in Lusikisiki and raised in Mthatha, Sifo initially pursued a corporate path, earning a project management level 4 certificate through Damelin/SETA in 2016 and later working as a Vodacom store manager in 2019.
Transition from Corporate Retail to Mthatha Agriculture
After a prolonged period of job hunting following her tenure at Vodacom, family members urged her to build her own enterprise. Her father, Mtutuzeli Sifo, maintained that his children should run businesses rather than work for employers. In 2024, Sifo began farming on a portion of the family’s 12-hectare arable holding in Mthatha, using personal savings to purchase initial inputs and relying on free seedlings from veteran local producers Nomsa Mfiri and MJ Mfiri. She started small with 300 cabbage seedlings, learning agronomy basics such as spacing, irrigation, fertilisation, and pest control.
Operations faced a severe setback on 10 June 2025, when heavy flooding devastated her initial crop and destroyed farm fencing. Sifo lost her entire harvest but chose to rebuild the enterprise from scratch. She reinvested her remaining resources to scale production significantly, expanding output to 5,000 cabbage seedlings focusing on the Mega Star and Green Coronet varieties. She also enrolled in climate-smart agriculture studies through Unisa to build long-term resilience against volatile weather patterns and soil degradation.
Commercial Scale and Retail Distribution in the Eastern Cape
By 2026, Sifo formally registered her business as Imbewu YeThemba Agricultural Projects, translating to “seed of hope.” She manages daily operations alongside core team member Musa, while Nomsa and MJ provide ongoing guidance. During peak harvesting periods, the farm employs up to five part-time workers. The enterprise supplies produce to local street vendors, individual buyers, and formal retail chains including Spar.
Sifo uses a delivery vehicle to transport freshly harvested cabbages across the Eastern Cape. As she works toward cultivating larger portions of the family’s 12-hectare land allocation, her immediate priorities include securing capital for infrastructure development, improving water management systems, and acquiring dedicated farm machinery.
