Shoprite CEO Pay Hits R117.8M as Group Sales Reach R270.8B
Shoprite Chief Executive Officer Pieter Engelbrecht earned R117.8 million in the 2026 financial year, working out to approximately R2.26 million a week, according to Shoprite’s latest remuneration report as reported by BusinessTech. The total compensation package increased by R30.788 million compared to the previous year’s R87 million, driven primarily by a once-off performance award tied to a three-year incentive program.
Executive Super Stretch Incentive Drives CEO Pay Increase
The primary driver behind the executive pay increase was the Executive Super Stretch Incentive, which added R36.403 million to the CEO’s remuneration for 2026. The incentive was linked to a three-year target established in October 2023 with a 100% achievement rate. While the share appreciation rights associated with the award vest after the financial year end, the amount entered the remuneration calculation because the performance period concluded.
Fixed remuneration also rose during the reporting period. Guaranteed pay increased from R20.971 million to R22.027 million, which included a base salary of R21.138 million. Pension fund and medical aid benefits climbed to R562,000, while secondary payments such as car allowances, subsistence allowances, and employee discounts fell to R327,000.
Short-term incentives increased from R18.088 million to R21.328 million after Engelbrecht achieved 108.3% of the operational targets for the year, up from 96.9% in 2025. Conversely, the value of shares vesting under the Executive Share Plan dropped from R25.895 million to R18.209 million. Deferred payments under the executive incentive arrangement also decreased from R20.849 million to R17.719 million, while qualifying dividends from unvested shares rose to R2.107 million.
