Shanghai, China – Valentin Vacherot, ranked No. 204 in the world, achieved a remarkable victory today, defeating his cousin Arthur Rinderknech to claim the Shanghai Masters title. The win marks a career high for Vacherot, earning him $1,124,380 – more than double his previous lifetime earnings.
The match presented a unique challenge for both players, requiring them to compartmentalize their close relationship during the most significant event of their professional careers. Their prior encounter occurred in a 2018 ITF event, where Rinderknech emerged victorious, earning approximately $400.
initially, Rinderknech appeared to be gaining control, securing the first set. However, Vacherot found his rhythm, capitalizing on his powerful first serve and ultimately breaking Rinderknech’s serve in the second set with a decisive backhand winner. He continued his momentum, winning five consecutive games to lead 2-0 in the final set, and ultimately closed out the match with dominant serving and aggressive shot-making.
following a final forehand passing shot, Vacherot and Rinderknech shared an emotional embrace at the net. Vacherot then celebrated with his coach and brother, Benjamin Ballarat, overcome with tears. Throughout the tournament, the cousins had used the post-match camera signing tradition to support one another, but this time Vacherot wrote a tribute: “Grandpa and grandma would be proud.”
The emotional weight of the occasion was evident as the two men sat together awaiting the trophy ceremony, sharing tears and heartfelt congratulations. Rinderknech even experienced cramps during Vacherot’s acceptance speech, momentarily falling from the podium.
“Two cousins are stronger than one,” Rinderknech said to Vacherot in French.”You won today, congratulations. I gave it my all. I’m so happy for you, I hope there will be more. I love you so much.”
