PARIS – French politicians are calling for severe sanctions for Paris Saint-Germain soccer fans who homophobically insulted Olympique Marseille fans during Sunday’s league clash. PSG clearly beat their rival 4:0 at home.
“I am shocked by the intolerable homophobic chanting that was heard at Princes Park,” wrote on the X social network Olivier Klein, who is in charge of the fight against racism, anti-Semitism and hatred towards the LGBTQ+ community in the French government. He added that he would call on the representatives of PSG and the French league to punish the culprits and check whether justice should be involved in the case.
Klein attached a video to his post in which PSG fans can be heard chanting at Marseille supporters. In another video, players of the Paris team can be seen insulting Olympique fans at the end of the match.
The Minister of Sports also joined the criticism
The criticism of the fans was joined by the Minister of Sports, Amélie Oudéaová-Castéraová, who called on the management of PSG to file a criminal complaint that would help to “identify the culprits and bring them to justice so that we can get them out of the stadiums.”
“It is unacceptable to turn a deaf ear to such hateful and homophobic chants in our stands. Yesterday, the chanting ruined the evening at the Park of the Princes. We need to erase this kind of stuff from our stadiums, and as quickly as possible.” said the minister.
In the past, French clubs were punished for similar offenses in the form of fines and closed stands. According to French law, public insults to gays are punishable by up to a year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.
The Paris club said in a statement that it condemns all forms of discrimination and “intends to strengthen prevention in the fight against homophobia.” His representatives added that they are planning a meeting with all their partners in the coming days to discuss the topic.
