Serre Chevalier Deploys Drone LiDAR and Electric Groomers for Sustainable Snow Management
Targeting resource conservation and better snow management across its ski terrain, Serre Chevalier in the French Alps—which produces 30% of its own green electricity on-site—is expanding its dedication to eco-friendly mountain practices through a series of circular-economy projects and new technologies.
The Tech TL;DR: Sustainable Mountain Operations at Serre Chevalier
- High-Precision Mapping: Partnering with Elda Technology, the resort uses drone-based LiDAR surveys to generate real-time models of snow depth, optimising grooming routes and reducing unnecessary snowmaking.
- Industrial Electric Groomers: Set to receive the first LEITWOLF LTE-Motion from PRINOTH and Compagnie des Alpes in autumn 2026, serving as a testbed for a fleet-wide transition over the next decade.
- Circular Economy Infrastructure: Launching La Ressourcerie by SCV to formalize internal reuse of materials and equipment, building on past projects like the Pontillas gondola construction.
Drone-Based LiDAR Surveys and Integrated Digital Platforms
One of the most significant advances comes from the sky. Through a partnership with Elda Technology, the resort presently employs drone-based LiDAR surveys for high-precision snow depth mapping.
These flights generate detailed, real-time models of snow distribution, giving piste teams a clear picture of where snow is abundant and where it is thin. As reported by Patrick Thorne, this data empowers Serre Chevalier to refine grooming paths, cut back on redundant artificial snow production, and oversee its terrain with vastly improved precision.
To process these spatial data streams efficiently, the resort has developed an integrated digital platform linking snowmaking, grooming operations and snow-depth monitoring. A proprietary measurement system is scheduled for installation on all groomers starting next winter, feeding telemetry directly back into the operational grid.
Industrial-Scale Electric Grooming Integration
The resort is also preparing for a major shift in grooming technology. Jointly presented by Compagnie des Alpes and PRINOTH, the LEITWOLF LTE-Motion represents the initial high-performance electric snow groomer manufactured on an industrial scale.
Offering four to five hours of runtime—which stretches to seven hours via fast charging—the unit generates zero particulate emissions alongside near-silent operation.
Production is being localised in Montmélian, Savoie, featuring European-made batteries and a proportion of locally sourced components to support regional industry and reduce transport impacts. Serre Chevalier will welcome the first LEITWOLF LTE-Motion in autumn 2026, functioning as a primary testbed for the technology. Compagnie des Alpes intends to convert its entire fleet of 100 groomers to electric variants over the next ten years, thereby establishing the enduring framework necessary to transform Alpine snow maintenance methods.
Circular-Economy Framework and Material Reuse
Resource efficiency extends beyond the slopes. Aiming to establish a permanent system for recycling components, equipment, and materials already owned by the enterprise, Serre Chevalier has introduced La Ressourcerie by SCV.
