USPS to Observe Columbus Day, Oct.13 – Self-Service Options Remain available
SACRAMENTO, CA – October 7, 2025 - The U.S. Postal Service will suspend regular operations on Monday, October 13, in observance of Columbus Day, a federal holiday. While traditional Post Office locations will be closed to the public, the USPS is emphasizing continued access to key services through its expanding network of self-service options.
This closure impacts mail delivery and in-person retail services across the nation, though Priority Mail Express will continue to be delivered. The disruption comes as the Postal Service actively modernizes its retail footprint, offering customers increasingly convenient alternatives to traditional counter service, especially during holiday closures. Regular mail delivery and full retail services will resume on Tuesday, October 14.
Customers needing to ship or manage mail while Post Offices are closed can utilize over 2,600 self-service kiosks located in select lobbies nationwide. These kiosks allow users to purchase stamps, print postage for Priority Mail, Priority Mail express, and international shipments, weigh and mail packages, and track existing shipments.
Beyond the kiosks, the USPS is rolling out additional self-service features at modernized locations. These include Rapid Dropoff Stations for pre-labeled packages, the ability to print shipping labels directly from merchant-provided QR codes, and 24/7 access Smart Lockers for both package drop-off and retrieval.
Many kiosks operate around the clock, providing versatility for customers.
