The pursuit of perfection often overshadows the beauty of unexpected detours. The graduate initially aimed for immediate success in comedy, anticipating that when they saw my talent (wishful thinking on my part), my career would take off. It was going to be perfect. Though, reality frequently enough presents a different narrative. This individual, like many others, grappled with perfectionism, a trait that can hinder progress. They confessed, I can’t bring myself to start anything if I think it won’t be perfect, current article not excluded. This struggle manifested in numerous unfinished projects, highlighting the paralyzing effect of striving for an unattainable ideal.

The serendipity of Imperfection

Despite initial setbacks, the college experience proved transformative. The graduate acknowledged that it was the most imperfect moments of my college experience that led to the best possible outcomes. What began as a perceived compromise—attending UMass with the intention to transfer—evolved into a cherished chapter. They found themselves surrounded by the most amazing,hardworking,kind people,many of whom I’m lucky to call my friends. This unexpected community became a cornerstone of their college life.

Unexpected Opportunities

Unforeseen opportunities often arise from embracing the imperfect. A struggle in a Short Form Documentary class led to an unexpected passion for television production. With the help of a professor, the student discovered classes in the Communication department’s television studio. After filming several of the classes,the student enrolled in one for the next semester,and can confidently say it is the best class I have ever taken. This newfound interest led to spending eight hours a week in the studio, and I love every minute of it.

Finding a Voice at the Collegian

Perhaps the most meaningful turning point came from an unexpected venture into student journalism. After failing to join a comedy group, the graduate stumbled into the Collegian office, desperate to write humor in any capacity—a decision that defined my college career in the most significant way possible. This pivotal moment ignited a passion for satire, which evolved into video production. As Head Video Editor, they found the role incredibly fun, challenging, overwhelming and rewarding. The Collegian became a space for growth, friendship, and self-revelation.

It was at the Collegian that I began writing satire articles and my passion for humor grew immensely. I transitioned my satire into video form and soon became the Head Video Editor, a role that has been incredibly fun, challenging, overwhelming and rewarding. I saw my shortcomings, and I rose to the challenge of overcoming them. I grew into my voice and expressed it in ways I never had before. And most importantly,it was at the Collegian that I met some of my closest friends.

Reflecting on their college years, the graduate realized that perfection is not only unattainable but also undesirable. They stated, If I were perfect, I would’ve never seen how persistent and passionate I could be. If I were perfect, I would’ve never met the most hardworking, passionate journalists in the world. And if I were perfect, I certainly wouldn’t be as funny as I am—and how sad would that be? The imperfections and hardships encountered along the way shaped their character and led to invaluable connections.
