Sega, Nintendo Switch 2 ‘Sonic Racing Cross World’

Sonic Racing Crossworlds Packs Full Game onto Switch 2 Cart

Sega clarifies physical edition details amid fan concerns.

Sega has confirmed that the upcoming “Sonic Racing Crossworlds” for the Nintendo Switch 2 will indeed feature the entire base game on its 64GB cartridge.

Full Game on Card for Switch 2

This announcement addresses previous confusion, as some consumers feared the Switch 2’s physical “Keycard” format would only contain a download code. Sega’s newly released FAQ explicitly states that the real package contains the entire basic game within the 64GB card.

The news comes as the gaming industry continues to grapple with digital versus physical game distribution. For instance, a 2023 industry report by Statista indicated that physical game sales, while declining, still represent a significant portion of the market, particularly among collectors (Statista, 2023).

Cross-Play and Upgrade Path Confirmed

Owners of the original Switch version will benefit from cross-play capabilities on the Switch 2. Furthermore, their existing game progress can be seamlessly transferred. Sega also announced a $10 paid upgrade pack for players transitioning to the Switch 2 version.

This move contrasts with Square Enix’s approach to the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D remake, which was criticized for lacking a Switch 2 upgrade path and save data compatibility between platforms in the same week.

Rivalry with Mario Kart World Expected

With DLC, “Cross World” will boast a large roster of playable characters, including iconic figures like **Sonic**, **Dr. Eggman**, **Knuckles**, **Shadow**, and **Tails**. The game is poised to compete directly with Nintendo’s own popular kart racer. The rivalry between “Sonic Racing Crossworlds” and “Mario Kart World” is anticipated to be a significant draw for racing game fans.

“Sonic Racing Crossworlds” is slated for release in September, simultaneously for both the original Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2.
