US, Pakistan Deepen Ties on Iran, Counterterrorism
Diplomatic discussions highlight regional stability efforts and expanded cooperation.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar today, fostering discussions on critical regional and bilateral issues.
Regional Diplomacy and Security
Secretary Rubio conveyed appreciation for Pakistan’s ongoing role in facilitating dialogue with Iran and its dedication to maintaining stability across the region. The leaders explored opportunities to bolster their joint efforts against terrorism, specifically targeting ISIS-K.
Further collaboration on this front will be a key focus of the upcoming U.S.-Pakistan Counterterrorism Dialogue scheduled for August in Islamabad.
Economic Prospects and Critical Minerals
The conversation also turned to economic opportunities, with Secretary Rubio emphasizing the importance of expanding mutually beneficial trade between the two nations. Both sides are keen to explore enhanced partnerships within the vital sectors of critical minerals and mining.
This focus on economic ties comes as global demand for critical minerals, essential for renewable energy technologies, continues to surge. For instance, the International Energy Agency reported that demand for critical minerals used in clean energy technologies could increase by up to 40 times by 2040.
