Max Scherzer will start for the Toronto Blue Jays against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3 of the World Series, following a postseason that saw his daughter’s heartfelt letter influence his return to the team. The announcement comes after Scherzer agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract with Toronto, a decision spurred in part by a handwritten note from his eight-year-old daughter, Brooke, urging him to rejoin the Blue Jays.

Brooke’s letter, penned on December 15th, expressed her disappointment over Toronto’s loss in the American League Championship Series against the Seattle Mariners and her desire for her father to continue playing for the team. “Dear Blue Jays,” the note read, “I’m very sad that you didn’t win the World Series. I hope you win next time. I hope my dad comes back to the team. My whole family loves spending time in Toronto with our dad. We loved the aquarium, the CN Tower and, of course, the stadium. I can’t wait to come back next season.” Erica May-Scherzer, the pitcher’s wife, shared a copy of the letter, highlighting its impact on the family’s decision.

Scherzer’s arrival in Toronto marks another chapter in a distinguished career. The 41-year-old right-hander, an eight-time All-Star, has played for Arizona, Detroit, Washington, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets, Texas, and Toronto. He currently ranks 11th all-time with 3,489 strikeouts, trailing only Walter Johnson by 20. His career record stands at 221-117 with a 3.22 ERA.

The Blue Jays faced the Mariners in a hard-fought American League Championship Series, with the series extending to a sixth game on October 18, 2025, before Toronto ultimately prevailed. The team now prepares to face the Dodgers, the defending champions, in the World Series. The October 25th game will observe Scherzer opposing Glasnow, setting the stage for a pivotal matchup in the best-of-seven series.

The Mariners had previously dispatched Gilbert in a game leading up to the championship series, as reported on October 20, 2025, further illustrating the competitive nature of the playoffs. The series between the Mariners and Blue Jays was closely contested, requiring a full seven games to determine the American League representative in the World Series.
