Fire Forces Closure of St Martin’s School in Oswestry
Oswestry, Shropshire – A serious fire broke out at St Martin’s School in Oswestry on Sunday evening, prompting a large response from Shropshire and north Wales Fire and Rescue Services. the school will be closed to all pupils on Monday, September 22nd, with updates to be communicated directly to parents via email.
Firefighters were first alerted to the blaze, which originated in the school hall area, and quickly mobilized.An initial response from Oswestry Fire Station requested additional resources, escalating to “8 pumps and an aerial ladder platform” at the height of the incident.Crews from Ellesmere also attended, committing teams wearing breathing apparatus inside the building while concurrently spraying water from rooftops.
“Crews worked extremely hard to stop this fire escalating and spreading to adjoining buildings,” according to a statement from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.North Wales Fire and Rescue Service provided support, remaining on standby at Oswestry Fire Station.
Ellesmere Fire Station reported that at its peak, the operation involved 8 pumping appliances, an aerial ladder platform, an Incident Command Vehicle, and a drone. Crews are continuing to work to extinguish all hotspots.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service expressed gratitude to school staff for thier assistance and pledged to work closely with the school.
