Schaerbeek Trees Vandalized: Officials Outraged, Case Escalates

Authorities Pursue “Serial Tree Saboteur” Following Latest Damage

Schaerbeek officials are decrying a pattern of tree vandalism after repeated incidents have left the community fuming. The latest destruction has prompted a renewed call for justice, with authorities escalating the investigation into the destructive acts.

“Unacceptable Acts” Spark Official Condemnation

The mayor of Schaerbeek, Audrey Henry, confirmed the extent of the damage, stating, “Fortunately, no one is injured,” emphasizing the unacceptable nature of the attacks. “These acts are unacceptable. It is not only to infringe our environment, but also to the quality of life of our inhabitants. We cannot tolerate such actions.”

Alderman Deborah Lorenzino, responsible for Schaerbeek’s green spaces, expressed her shock and anger. “It is misunderstanding. I really don’t understand motivations,” she stated, dismayed by the senseless destruction.

Suspect Arrested, Released as Investigation Intensifies

In late June, several trees in the same Schaerbeek neighborhood were targeted in a similar fashion. A suspect was apprehended and detained in early July but has since been released. The police have documented the scene, and the municipality has filed a fourth complaint regarding the ongoing incidents.

Efforts to protect all the affected trees are proving costly and time-consuming. The green spaces alderman stressed the need for a judicial response. “Given the severity and rehearsal of the facts, the file was sent to the Brussels prosecutor’s office, competent to decide any legal proceedings,” confirmed the Schaerbeek mayor.
