Christian Scaroni of Astana XDS secured overall victory in the 2026 Tour of Oman, simultaneously winning stage 5 with a commanding performance on the ascent to Jabal Al Akhdhar (Green Mountain). The Italian rider responded to a series of attacks before launching his own decisive move in the final 100 meters, overtaking Luke Plapp and ultimately powering to the finish line.
Two-time defending champion Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) instigated a furious pace on the 5.7km climb, repeatedly accelerating in an attempt to distance his rivals. Even as his efforts proved successful in shedding the overall race leader, Mauro Schmid (Jayco-AlUla), Scaroni remained steadfastly within Yates’ reach.
A key factor in Scaroni’s success was the support of his new teammate, Cristián Rodríguez, a recent addition to the Astana XDS team after transferring from Arkéa-B&B Hotels. Rodríguez’s presence proved crucial in the final kilometers, as he positioned himself to follow Scaroni’s attack and ultimately secured second place on both the stage and in the general classification.
Yates’ relentless attacks ultimately propelled him to third place a testament to his determination despite failing to secure a third consecutive Tour of Oman title. Schmid, who had entered the stage as the overall leader, was unable to maintain the pace set by Yates and Scaroni, losing valuable time on the steep slopes of Green Mountain.
The stage unfolded over a 155-kilometer route from Nizwa to Jabal Al Akhdhar, featuring a challenging ascent that averaged nearly 10.5% gradient. The Tour of Oman, running from February 7th to February 11th, has featured a diverse range of terrains, including sprints, punchy climbs, and the demanding mountain finishes.
The 2026 edition of the race has drawn a competitive field, including sprinters like Bryan Coquard and Rick Pluimers, as well as strong climbers such as Sepp Kuss, Einer Rubio, and Lorenzo Fortunato, alongside Yates, and Schmid. Last year, Valentin Paret-Peintre claimed victory on Green Mountain, but Yates ultimately prevailed in the overall standings.
The Tour of Oman commenced with a flat opening stage, followed by a challenging ascent to Yitti Hills on stage two. Stage three culminated in a steep 3.4km climb at an average of 8% on Eastern Mountain, where Mauro Schmid initially seized the overall lead. Stage four presented a potential opportunity for sprinters before the decisive final stage to Jabal Al Akhdhar.
