Sarawak Claims Men’s Badminton Gold, Women’s Silver at Borneo Games 2025
KUCHING, SARAWAK – sarawak’s men’s badminton team struck gold while the women’s team secured silver at the Borneo Games 2025, marking a successful outing for the state in the team events concluded today. The men’s team defeated Sabah 4-1 in a decisive final, while the women’s team fought valiantly but ultimately fell to Sabah with a score of 1-4.
The Borneo Games,a biennial multi-sport event featuring athletes from Borneo’s Indonesian,Malaysian,and Bruneian territories,serves as a crucial platform for developing young talent and fostering regional cooperation. Sarawak’s performance in badminton underscores the state’s commitment to the sport and provides a boost to its athletes as they look towards future competitions. East Kalimantan claimed the bronze medal in both the men’s and women’s team events.
The men’s team victory was spearheaded by Goh Shun Huat, who dominated his singles match against Victor Yap Ka How with scores of 21-8 and 21-17. Shawn Hiu also secured a crucial win after overcoming a first-set loss to muhammad Nur Azhar Zunaide (15-21, 21-11, 21-14). the pairing of Kong Chee Kiet and Barrie Chong Kwang Wei sealed the win with a composed performance, defeating Muhammad yasrin S. Ruslan and Mohd Nur Syazwansyah Suriansa 21-13,21-17. Despite a loss in the first doubles match and a retirement in the third singles,Sarawak’s overall strength proved too much for Sabah.
In the women’s final, Sarawak’s sole victory came from the sisters Felicia Fong Xin Hui and Flora Fong Xin jie, who triumphed in their doubles tie against Chua Jing Xuan and Lim ke Xuan with a score of 21-12, 21-17. However, Sabah proved dominant in the other matches, securing wins in both singles and the remaining doubles match. Brenda Jong Jing hui lost to Saidatul Saadiah Muhammad (11-21, 14-21), Janice Tchin Yao Xuan fell to Cassey Rynn Rompog (23-25, 12-21), and Wafa Shahmina Rahman suffered defeats in both her singles and doubles matches.
