Sarah J. Maas Fans Celebrate A Court of Splintered Harmony Launch

Sarah J. Maas Fans Celebrate A Court of Splintered Harmony Launch

October 27, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The boxes were sealed. The readers were ready. And when the countdown reached midnight, rose petals filled the air.

Devotees gathered at Book Hero NZ marked the conclusion of a half-decade wait for the newest chapter in Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series. The debut of A Court of Splintered Harmony sparked lines, costumes, and a nocturnal party reminiscent of Harry Potter book openings.

The fantasy series has sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Some readers traveled across New Zealand for the midnight occasion.

Travelers and Costumes at Book Hero NZ

“I came all the way from Christchurch. Just for this,” one fan told 1News. Another attendee expressed relief simply to return to familiar characters.

The dedication of the crowd was evident in the effort participants put into their attire, according to Sacha Wackrow from Book Hero. “There were a lot of great outfits. Like, a lot of people came dressed for the books and everyone was just here to really celebrate,” Wackrow said. “It’s been five years since the last book. This kind of fandom just doesn’t happen every day.”

A court of splintered harmony

One attendee, Evelyn, wore an outfit inspired by Nesta Archeron, one of the series’ central characters. Having successfully drawn a pal into the fandom, she had urged her acquaintance to power through the preceding volumes prior to the fresh publication. “My friend only finished it, like, midnight last night, so I forced her to read through all of the books in, like, like six months,” Evelyn told 1News.

Reviving Reading Habits Through Romantasy

The series falls into the ‘romantasy’ genre, which blends romance with elaborate fantasy worlds. For some fans, the appeal has extended well beyond one author’s books.

“ACOTAR’s what got me back into reading,” fan Jade Watson said. The midnight event served as her first book launch and a chance to meet others who shared her enthusiasm.

“I’ve met so many beautiful people in there, and it’s good to connect with people who also love books and love reading,” Watson said. “I’ve made quite a few friends out of it, which is awesome too.”

Wackrow noted that attendees often knew each other previously only through online book communities. “They bonded over their love of books and then they just all decided to come here and party together and meet each other,” she said.

Sexual Content Sparks School Library Bans in Utah

The enthusiasm has come alongside debate over the series’ sexual content. Certain books within A Court of Thorns and Roses face bans across select American school libraries, which includes statewide prohibitions implemented in Utah. The limitations focus specifically on school availability rather than imposing a blanket ban preventing adults from purchasing or reading the volumes.

Wackrow said the books contained adult themes but pushed back against dismissing their appeal. “It’s spice and it’s nice,” Wackrow said. “I just think it’s so wonderful and it’s got people back into reading and what’s wrong with having a little fun?”

Prior to the latest book hitting shelves, the writer urged supporters to refrain from sharing leaked content so that all readers could enjoy the complete narrative unspoiled. For Wackrow, avoiding spoilers was about protecting the experience. “People have waited so long they need time to actually sit down and read it.”

Book Hero Prepares Hundreds of Same-Day Deliveries

At Book Hero, release rules meant the books remained sealed until midnight. Once the boxes were opened, staff began packing orders for readers who had opted to wait at home.

The shop received more than 1,000 pre-orders, with staff working into the early hours to prepare hundreds for same-day delivery. According to NZ Post, the postal service collaborated with the store to ensure patrons in Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton, and Auckland received their packages on launch day.

For individuals exiting the midnight gathering with a physical volume already secured, the pressing dilemma involved calculating how many pages they could finish before dawn. One fan had a practical reason to resist late-night reading.

“I have a classroom full of kids at 8 o’clock tomorrow morning, so nope, home to bed – but definitely tomorrow,” the fan said. Others had no intention of putting the book down. “And I’m not going to get any sleep tonight.”
