New Santa Clara Complex to Bring Affordable Housing, Sports Facility
SANTA CLARA, CA – A new growth in Santa Clara promises to address both the region’s housing shortage and a need for dedicated sports facilities, with hundreds of apartments and a 7,600-square-foot community room slated to open next year. The project, located at Gateway Crossings, will provide a central hub for the Santa clara Police Activities League (PAL) and considerably reduce operational costs for the association.
The development arrives as Santa Clara faces ongoing challenges with housing availability and limited spaces for youth sports programs. The PAL,currently utilizing scattered locations throughout the city, will gain a permanent home for indoor sports like judo and boxing, while the complex will add much-needed rental units to the area. The project’s affordability is further enhanced by the PAL’s lease agreement of just $1 per month.
Mike Walke, board president of the Santa Clara PAL, expressed long-held anticipation for the project. “We can actually hold the tournaments right here in our city,” Walke told San José Spotlight. “It gets the city of Santa Clara to (be at) the front of the various sports we’re going to do there.”
Currently, the league spends thousands annually on rental fees for its programs. The new community room is expected to eliminate those costs, freeing up resources for other initiatives. walke envisions a facility “athletes can be proud of” and anticipates opening the space after securing necessary city permits.
