Brondello Nears Liberty Coaching Milestone

Coach on Verge of Franchise Record 100 Wins

New York Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello is on the cusp of making franchise history. Following their 88-77 road victory against the Wings, Brondello has now accumulated 100 wins as the Liberty’s bench boss, matching the team’s all-time record.

A Rapid Ascent to the Top

Remarkably, Brondello achieved this feat in just her fourth season with the team, a pace that surpasses the six seasons it took her predecessor, Adubato, to reach the same milestone.

Player Leonie Fiebich highlighted Brondello’s impact, stating, She’s got our backs. You can just tell she’s been a player and she really understands the process we go through as players. You can just build a relationship with her because she’s a good person and you can always come talk to her. That just adds to the basketball stuff, the coaching stuff on the court. To have that combination is pretty rare.

Building a Championship Culture

After an initial challenging season, Brondello has transformed the Liberty into consistent contenders. The team has reached the WNBA Finals in the last two years, clinching the championship last season by defeating the Lynx in five games.

Brondello expressed her satisfaction, saying, It’s a great organization to be coaching for. To get 100 wins, this is my fourth year, it means I have a pretty good team, we’ve been winning. A lot more wins to go.

Player Trust and Connection

Several current Liberty players have prior experience playing under Brondello, having sought her out for a second opportunity. Isabelle Harrison and Stephanie Talbot previously played for her with the Mercury, and Brondello also coaches Talbot on the Australian national team. Additionally, Emma Meesseman played under Brondello during their time at UMMC Ekaterinburg.

Meesseman shared her appreciation for Brondello’s approach:

“I know Sandy as a family person. Her two kids, they were always there. As a coach, that’s really important to show that side, too. Because you’re away from home, you have to come in every single day, so you want to have a relationship where you trust your coach, really feel like she has your back and that you can be human, you’re not just a product on the court. That’s what I love about Sandy, this staff over here. The basketball side, obviously it’s 100 wins. So you don’t get that for nothing. She’s gonna keep going and she’s gonna build her legacy.”

Brondello’s ability to connect with her players off the court appears to be as crucial as her tactical expertise. For a team brimming with star power, her leadership is credited with fostering team cohesion and maximizing individual performance.

As of July 2025, the New York Liberty boasted a league-leading 15.5 offensive rating, underscoring their potent scoring ability under Brondello’s guidance (source: WNBA.com).
