San Diego Padres pitcher Mason Miller yields walk-off single to Brewers

San Diego Padres pitcher Mason Miller yields walk-off single to Brewers

October 6, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

San Diego Padres Mason Miller gave up a two-out, ninth-inning, two-run walk-off single to Jackson Chourio of the Milwaukee Brewers on October 5, during Game 2 of the National League Division Series at American Family Field, sealing a 4-3 defeat that left San Diego facing elimination.

How the Ninth Inning Unraveled at American Family Field

The game began with strong pitching efficiency from the Padres bullpen. Entering in the bottom of the eighth inning with a 3-2 lead, Miller struck out Bryce Turang on a foul tip, got Jake Bauers swinging, and induced a flyout to right from William Contreras. But the ninth inning brought a stark shift in control as command deserted the hard-throwing right-hander. According to Sports Chosun reporting, Miller issued a leadoff walk to Christian Yelich, who then stole a base before Sal Frelick drew another walk as outside corner-work failed. After retiring Andrew Bone on a fly ball to center, Miller walked Gary Sánchez to load the bases with 34 pitches already thrown.

Jackson Chourio stepped to the plate amid a quiet postseason slump. Facing a 2-2 count, Miller delivered a 101.3-mph fastball right down the middle. Chourio squared it up cleanly, launching a 109.5-mph liner past the second baseman and toward center fielder Jackson Merrill. Two runners crossed the plate, completing the 4-3 comeback victory and handing the Padres their second road loss of the series.

Weighing Heavy Workloads Against Pitch-Tipping Speculation

The sequence triggered sharp scrutiny over Miller’s usage and mechanics. Prior to the eighth-inning call, the reliever had rested three days following a one-inning, 4-1 save against the Chicago Cubs in Game 2 of the Wild Card round on October 1. Deploying him for an extended two-inning stint pushed his pitch count to 40, the highest total of his campaign. During the regular season, Miller had exceeded 1.3 innings only nine times, pitched two full innings just twice, reached a maximum of 34 pitches in a single outing, and crossed the 30-pitch threshold merely four times.

That heavy workload fueled online speculation that fatigue caused his mechanics to slip, potentially tipping his pitches to the Milwaukee hitters. Addressing the social media chatter after the game, Associated Press coverage noted that Padres manager Craig Stamman dismissed the notion that Milwaukee had decoded his velocity or pitch selection.

The internet can go crazy and take things farther than they need to go.

Stamman added that the organization remains satisfied with its daily processes, noting that multiple team personnel monitor such concerns closely without undue alarm. Speed certainly did not appear to be the limiting factor on the mound. Miller maintained elite velocity, touching a high of 103.5 mph and averaging 102.0 mph, with all 18 of his fastballs registering in triple digits. Nor did raw fatigue from the eighth frame fully explain the ninth-inning collapse, given that he threw only 12 pitches in the eighth and just two to the first batter of the ninth before the walk trouble mounted.
