Samsung is preparing a shocking change! The Galaxy S26 series will see big news

Galaxy S26 Leaks Hint at Major Design Shift

Samsung may ditch the ‘Plus’ model for an ‘Edge’ variant.

Early leaks surrounding the Galaxy S26 suggest a significant shake-up in **Samsung’s** flagship lineup. The base model may feature a distinctive jump in your model number, potentially signaling considerable hardware changes. Will the ‘Plus’ vanish?

Unusual Model Numbering Spotted

For years, **Samsung** has maintained a predictable model numbering system for its Galaxy S phones. The standard model typically ends in “1,” the Plus in “6,” and the Ultra in “8.” However, the GSMA database, as reported by Samypolice, reveals a mysterious SM-S942, thought to be the base Galaxy S26. Also listed are the SM-S947 (Galaxy S26 Edge) and SM-S948 (Galaxy S26 Ultra).

Interestingly, a model labeled “6,” which would traditionally represent the Galaxy S26 Plus, is missing. This absence has ignited speculation that **Samsung** might discontinue the Plus variant altogether, possibly replacing it with the Edge model previously seen in the S25 series.

Strategic Shift to ‘Edge’?

Replacing the Plus with the Edge model could prove a strategic move for several reasons. Sources close to **Samsung** suggest that the Plus model has struggled with weaker sales compared to other models. For instance, in 2023, the Galaxy S23 Plus accounted for only 11% of total Galaxy S23 sales, according to Counterpoint Research. This compares to 47% for the base S23 and 42% for the S23 Ultra.

The Galaxy S25 Edge, introduced this year, garnered attention with its slim profile (5.8 mm) and upgraded 200MP main camera borrowed from the Ultra. Although it features fewer cameras than the Plus, the Edge offers a distinctive design and greater differentiation from the base model, potentially appealing more to consumers.

Moreover, the Plus model has struggled to establish a clear identity, sitting between the base model and the premium Ultra. The Edge variant, on the other hand, presents a more distinct proposition.

What Does the Model Number Change Mean?

The SM-S942 model number for the base Galaxy S26, instead of the expected SM-S941, hints at a significant departure from **Samsung’s** established practices. The last time **Samsung** made a similar numbering change, they unveiled the unexpected Galaxy S25 Edge, which effectively surpassed the Plus model.

The altered model number for the standard version could indicate that **Samsung** intends to enhance the base model more substantially, possibly incorporating features previously exclusive to the Plus variant, such as a larger display or a more powerful battery. This strategy aims to streamline the product range and ensure the base model remains compelling.

Expected Release Timeline

Based on current information, **Samsung** is likely to unveil the Galaxy S26 series in January of next year. Speculation points to Wednesday, January 21, 2026, as the most probable launch date. More leaks are anticipated leading up to the official announcement.
