Samsung to Silence Aggressive App Ads with new Feature
Seoul, South Korea – Samsung is set to launch a new feature designed to combat excessive advertising within mobile apps, offering users greater control over unwanted notifications and background activity. Teh functionality, dubbed “Apps with excessive advertising blocked,” will debut with the release of One UI 8.5, initially on the Galaxy S26 series slated for launch in early 2026.
The system proactively monitors app behavior, identifying those that deliver a high volume of advertisements thru banners, pop-ups, or repeated push notifications. Once flagged, the app enters a “sleep mode,” halting background processes, suppressing notifications, and reducing energy consumption.Users must manually open the app to resume its operation.
This move signals a clear strategy by Samsung to prioritize user experiance by curbing disruptive third-party advertising, rather than relying on its own advertising revenue streams. The feature aims to minimize interruptions and potentially reduce tracking by external advertising networks.
Currently, the feature is exclusive to devices running One UI 8.5,meaning it will initially be available only on the Galaxy S26 series. ItS important to note the feature does not block advertisements displayed within apps themselves, such as those found in games or app stores, but focuses on external, notification-based advertising.
Users will need to actively enable the feature through Settings > apps > Special access, toggling on the “Apps with excessive advertising blocked” option. The system will then prompt users to put identified apps to sleep, with the option to create exemptions.
Apps commonly affected include games with frequent ads, shopping apps sending numerous promotional notifications, certain news applications, and social media platforms utilizing pop-up advertisements.
Samsung anticipates this feature will provide a more streamlined and user-friendly mobile experience, reducing distractions and optimizing battery life.
