The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) stated that the incident began around 7:56 pm local time. A sergeant from the SLCPD Motor Squad reported hearing gunfire near 151 South State Street. The sergeant and his team were present to manage traffic and ensure public safety during a permitted demonstration, which drew an estimated 10,000 attendees.
