Samoa Joe says Twisted Metal call came four hours after WWE release
Samoa Joe revealed at a Tampa church on Sunday that he received a casting call for Peacock’s Twisted Metal just four hours after being fired by WWE for the second time in January 2022. The timeline aligns with his transition to All Elite Wrestling and a starring role as the physical actor for Sweet Tooth.
Why Did Samoa Joe Share the Firing Story at Church?
The conversation took place on stage at Grace Family Church during the congregation’s “A Principle Driven Life” service on Sunday, as reported by F4WOnline. Samoa Joe, an 18-year member of the Tampa church, spoke with founding pastor Craig Altman about faith, tithing, and his career. Joe recounted the chaotic morning in January 2022 when WWE released him for a second time following corporate restructuring under Triple H’s former NXT setup, according to F4WOnline. Joe detailed walking into his home to break the news to his wife, who reassured him by saying, “God’s got this. We’re gonna be fine.”
How Quickly Did the Twisted Metal Call Arrive After the Release?
Four hours after receiving the pink slip, Joe received a phone call from Sony executive Carter Swan, a friend he had not spoken to in roughly 15 years. Swan asked him to submit an audition tape to star as Sweet Tooth in a brand-new television series for Peacock. Joe submitted the tape, secured the role, and immediately walked back to tell his wife that he was starring in a television show. While Joe previously mentioned the timing as “a couple of hours” on MVP’s Marking Out podcast in August 2025, his Sunday church appearance specified the exact gap as four hours and included his wife’s reaction.
What Was the Corporate Timeline Leading Up to the Release?
WWE initially released Joe in April 2021 while he was working as a play-by-play commentator on Monday Night Raw following a concussion, as documented by F4WOnline. Triple H rehired him two months later in June 2021 for a hybrid talent and scout role in NXT. Joe returned to the ring and captured his third NXT Championship before relinquishing it due to an injury. When corporate leadership altered the NXT structure in January 2022, Joe was let go alongside other backstage personnel, setting the stage for his pivot to Hollywood and All Elite Wrestling.
What Are the Details for His Upcoming Appearance?
Samoa Joe signed with All Elite Wrestling shortly after his departure from WWE and debuted in March 2022, going on to hold the ROH World Television Championship for a record 575 days and winning the AEW World Championship at Worlds End in December 2023. He faces Jack Perry in a Clockwork Carnage qualifier this Tuesday at AEW Grand Slam France.
