Sam Register Exits as Warner Bros Animation President After Three Decades
Sam Register is stepping down as president of Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, according to an internal memo sent Tuesday by Warner Bros. Television Group and U.S. Networks Chairman and CEO Channing Dungey. The departure arrives as Warner Bros. Discovery navigates a pending acquisition by Paramount.
The End of an 18-Year Toon Empire Run
Appointed by previous Warner Bros. TV Group leadership, Register joined Warner Bros. Animation in November 2007 as a producer before taking the helm as president in 2014, eventually adding Cartoon Network Studios to his portfolio in 2020. During his run, the studio produced enduring franchise pillars including Teen Titans Go!, Harley Quinn, My Adventures with Superman, and Batman: Caped Crusader, alongside a robust line of DC Universe animated movies. According to Deadline, Dungey informed staff in her memo that the studio and its head mutually agreed not to renew his expiring contract.
“It’s with mixed emotions that I announce the studio and our head of animation, Sam Register, have mutually agreed not to renew his contract,” Dungey wrote in the memo, as reported by Deadline. Register reflected on his departure in a statement, noting, “It’s time for me to move onto the next chapter in my life, and I’m grateful to have Channing’s support as I exit Warner Bros Animation.”
Navigating the Paramount Merger and Leadership Shift
The timing of Register’s departure coincides with a massive corporate restructuring. The executive’s exit unfolds while the broader Warner Bros. organization deals with the ongoing battle to close the Paramount acquisition. With basic cable on the decline and streaming platforms adjusting their focus on kids and family original content, the division has faced significant contraction.
Dungey stated in her memo that a search for a replacement is already underway. In the interim, business operations will remain under the direction of Matt Matzkin. Meanwhile, the studio’s creative department heads—including Jay Bastian for Current Series, Jason DeMarco for Anime and Action Series, Audrey Diehl for Kids and Family, Sarah Fell for Hanna-Barbera Studios in the UK, Peter Girardi for Alternative Programming and Adult, and Sammy Perlmutter for Long Form and Specials—will continue leading their respective creative teams.
Current Operational Status and Future Slate
Despite the executive transition at the top, active productions continue forward under the existing departmental leadership. The studio recently marked the release of Batman: Knightfall – Part 1: Knightfall, demonstrating that day-to-day output remains steady even as corporate ownership questions linger. However, the long-term strategic direction of the animation division remains tied to the resolution of the pending Paramount merger, leaving incoming leadership to align with whatever new corporate priorities emerge from the transaction.
