Morena Deputy Salvador Ramírez Resigns Post After Controversial Remarks on Charlie Kirk Shooting
Mexico City – Salvador Ramírez, Social Communication Coordinator for the Morena party’s Deputies in Mexico City, has renounced his position following widespread criticism of comments he made regarding the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The resignation comes after former U.S.Ambassador too Mexico, Christopher Landau, publicly condemned Ramírez’s statements as “unfortunate” and indicative of a troubling level of discourse.
Ramírez made the remarks during a televised debate, referencing the shooting of Kirk, who was wounded in the neck at an event at the University of Utah. He noted Kirk’s advocacy for the use of firearms, stating, “Thay gave a spoonful of their own chocolate, they gave someone who promoted the use of weapons…”
Landau responded on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his dismay and stating, “I am ashamed to have interacted with you during my management as the United States ambassador to Mexico.” He had previously criticized social media users for “glorifying violence” following the attack.
Tyler Robinson, 22, of Utah, has been arrested and charged with Kirk’s murder. Authorities state Robinson confessed to a family member and harbored a “deep disdain” for Kirk’s conservative viewpoints, having become “more political” in the period leading up to the shooting.
Ramírez, in a statement, apologized for the comments, clarifying they related to the parliamentary group and were not intended personally. However, the controversy prompted his decision to step down from his role as coordinator.
