Salt Lake City Delta Center hosts UFC events and sudden finishes

Salt Lake City Delta Center hosts UFC events and sudden finishes

October 2, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Salt Lake City has hosted three UFC events since 2022, yet the Utah capital’s Delta Center (originally called Vivint Arena) has built a reputation for high-stakes finishes, led by championship comebacks and sudden knockouts. As reported ahead of UFC 332, the promotion’s sparse visits to Utah have produced some of the most dramatic conclusions in recent MMA history.

The Welterweight Title Shift at UFC 278

Before 2022, the Octagon traveled to Salt Lake City just once for a 2016 fight night featuring Yair Rodriguez and Alex Caceres. That featherweight bout ended in a split decision for Rodriguez, and six years passed before the promotion returned to Utah’s capital on August 20, 2022, for UFC 278. Down on all judges’ scorecards, challenger Leon Edwards landed a high kick that ended Kamaru Usman’s 15-fight winning streak. UFC play-by-play announcer Jon Anik captured the moment on the broadcast, exclaiming, “No way! And new!” The victory made Edwards the second England-born champion in the organization’s history. Following the win, Edwards delivered a post-fight quote: “They all doubted me, said I couldn’t do it. They all said I couldn’t do it. Look at me now. Pound-for-pound, headshot, dead!”

The BMF Title Rematch and Salt Lake City’s Knockout Trend

Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier met again in Salt Lake City with the symbolic BMF title and a potential lightweight title shot on the line, following their initial 2018 encounter. One minute into the second round, Gaethje landed a high kick that toppled Poirier. The knockout closely mirrored Edwards’ finish from the previous year. Roman Kopylov added another head kick knockout earlier on the same card, cementing Salt Lake City’s nickname as “Head Kick City” for combat sports fans.

For Gaethje, the victory added the “baddest motherf***er” moniker to his career resume. Earlier on the 2023 card, heavyweight Derrick Lewis entered the event having lost four of his previous five fights, securing a quick finish by landing a flying knee on Marcos Rogério de Lima.

Upcoming Flyweight Action at Delta Center

As Natalia Silva and Wang Cong prepare to headline UFC 332 with flyweight gold on the line, the question remains whether the Delta Center will produce another sudden finish or extend the venue’s streak of dramatic main events.
