Sal Frelick to play 2026 World Series, oasport.it reports
Sal Frelick will appear in the 2026 World Series for the Milwaukee Brewers, guaranteeing that a player with ties to the Italian national baseball team will participate in the championship matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays, oasport.it reported. Neither franchise has ever won a World Series title in its history.
Shoulder Injury Disrupts the 2026 Campaign
The 2026 season brought a significant dip in offensive production for the Boston-born outfielder. Across 111 games, Frelick batted .230 with 4 home runs, 40 RBIs, and 7 stolen bases. Oasport.it reported that the primary driver behind these lowered numbers was a right shoulder injury that sidelined him in mid-July. He completed his rehabilitation assignment in Triple-A with the Nashville Sounds before returning to the major league roster on August 25.
This output contrasts sharply with his 2025 campaign. Over 142 games that year, Frelick posted a .288 batting average, hit 12 home runs, drove in 63 runs, and stole 19 bases. Prior to that, his defensive prowess earned him a Gold Glove award in 2024.
The World Baseball Classic Connection and Missed Reunion
Frelick’s connection to Italian baseball dates back to the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Playing for Italy—qualifying through both sides of a family with Croatian roots on the surname side and Italian heritage throughout—he recorded a .304 batting average with 7 hits and 4 RBIs across 5 games, just months before his major league debut with Milwaukee.
According to oasport.it, Frelick expressed a clear desire to rejoin the Italian squad for the 2026 tournament. However, a series of physical setbacks hampered his preparation, leading to a joint decision made with the Brewers at the end of 2025 to bypass international play and focus entirely on recovery and rehabilitation.
A Guaranteed First-Time Champion
The upcoming Fall Classic between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays ensures a historic outcome for Major League Baseball. Because neither organization has ever claimed a title in their history, the 2026 World Series will feature a new champion, with Frelick active on the Milwaukee side.
