Saint Mary’s College Expands Athletics and Health Sciences Offerings with New aquatics Programme and Academic Initiatives
MORAGA, CA – Saint Mary’s College of California is significantly expanding its academic and athletic opportunities with the launch of a new Division I aquatics program, encompassing Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Water Polo, and the introduction of Bachelor of Science degrees in Nursing and Public Health.
The new aquatics program builds on the College’s regional strength and has received national endorsement, positioning it to elevate Saint Mary’s profile alongside established programs like Gaels Basketball on the division I stage. The college is partnering with President Thompson and his team to ensure a meaningful and sustainable launch. Position postings for head coaches in both Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Water Polo will go live on September 15th, with appointments anticipated by mid-October.
“We are committed to hiring coaches who not only bring a track record of competitive success, but who also embody the values that make Saint Mary’s unique,” said Mike Matoso, SMC’s Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. “Their leadership will be critical as we build programs that reflect excellence in the pool and the classroom, and that provide a transformative experience for our student-athletes.”
Beyond athletics, Saint Mary’s is bolstering its commitment to health sciences education. This fall, the College launched a fully accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing, integrating rigorous clinical training with a Lasallian liberal arts foundation. A new Bachelor of Science in public Health major also debuted, offering a pathway for students interested in healthcare leadership, policy, and community well-being, and providing a seamless transition for those considering the Nursing program. Thes initiatives aim to address critical needs within California’s healthcare landscape and cultivate compassionate professionals.
Founded in 1863, Saint Mary’s College serves nearly 2,800 students on its moraga campus, located 23 miles east of San Francisco. The University is consistently recognized for its academic quality, ranking among the top five regional universities in the West according to US News and world Report. Saint Mary’s is also featured in Colleges That Change Lives, being the only Catholic college and the first university in California to be included in the guide.
