Saint Etienne Hints at Past Connection with Winona Ryder Ahead of Final Album Release
Indie pop group Saint Etienne sparked curiosity among fans this week with a cryptic Facebook post referencing actress Winona Ryder. The band wrote, “Stranger things have happened… but glad we were there for you, @winonaryderofficial. And yes, we’re still together!”
The post likely alludes to a shared experience during the filming of The house Of The Spirits in early 1993. Ryder starred in the film, a drama spanning three generations of a Chilean family set against the backdrop of the country’s military dictatorship, alongside Jeremy Irons, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Antonio Banderas, and Vanessa Redgrave.Scenes were shot on location in Lisbon, Portugal during that period.
Saint Etienne’s second studio album, ‘So Tough’, was released in February 1993, coinciding with Ryder’s time filming in Lisbon. The album featured the singles ‘Avenue’, ‘You’re In A Bad Way’, and ‘Hobart Paving’ and reached the UK Top Ten.
the band is preparing to release their final album, ‘International‘, on September 5. They announced the decision to conclude their recording career after 35 years, stating they “remain the best of friends… but they don’t feel like they want to go on forever and wanted to go out with a bang.”
‘International’ boasts a diverse range of collaborations, including janet Planet of Confidence Man, Erol Alkan, vince Clarke, Nick Heyward, and Paul Hartnoll of Orbital.
Ryder recently discussed her approach to mentoring the younger cast members on the Netflix series Stranger Things. She emphasized the actors’ unique talent, telling them,”They have it drilled into them that they’re so lucky and,you no,that this show ‘made’ them… I’m like,’No. Netflix is so lucky. You guys are the special ones. Like, you guys are magic.'”
