SABIC‘s New Film Technology Promises High-Temperature Performance for Next-Gen Capacitors
Shanghai, China – SABIC, a global leader in diversified chemicals, is set to present groundbreaking advancements in dielectric film technology at PCIM asia 2025, held in Shanghai from September 24-26. Teh company will showcase its ultra-thin ELCRES™ HTV150 film, designed to significantly improve the performance of capacitors in demanding applications like electric vehicle (EV) AC-DC inverters. Attendees can find SABIC at Hall N5, Booth F03.
The key innovation lies in the film’s ability to maintain high voltage operation at elevated temperatures – up to 150°C - with minimal voltage derating. This addresses a critical challenge in modern electrical systems where increasing power demands often lead to higher operating temperatures.
“Higher voltages are becoming increasingly common across a wide range of electrical applications,” explains Sergi Monros, Vice President, SABIC Polymers, Specialties BU. “While this trend boosts efficiency, it also introduces important engineering hurdles. SABIC is committed to leading the way with specialty materials that excel under high voltage, high temperature, and harsh conditions, enabling our customers to develop the next generation of electrified components.”
Addressing Voltage Derating – A Major Performance Bottleneck
Customary polymer film capacitors frequently enough suffer significant voltage reduction when exposed to high temperatures. Capacitors utilizing biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film, for instance, can experience a voltage derating of up to 50% at temperatures exceeding 125°C,necessitating the use of thicker, bulkier components.
Though, recent independent testing conducted by Nichicon, a renowned Japanese capacitor manufacturer, demonstrates a substantial betterment with ELCRES HTV150. Nichicon’s results show minimal voltage derating - just 4.8% at 130°C and 14% at 150°C – when using capacitors made with SABIC’s film. This allows for smaller, more efficient capacitor designs without compromising performance or reliability.
