According to reporting from The Athletic, the veteran winger aims to inject high-volume forechecking and physical grit into a fourth line prioritized by head coach Rick Bowness ahead of the upcoming NHL season.
Establishing Roots and Familiar Faces in Columbus
Entering his tenure in Ohio, Lomberg brings prior familiarity with select organizational figures. The Athletic notes that during the 2019-20 season, Lomberg and defenseman Jake Christiansen briefly skated together in Stockton, California, as members of the American Hockey League affiliate for the Calgary Flames. That same Stockton roster featured Aaron Johnson, a former Blue Jackets defenseman who now serves within the Columbus front office.
Beyond historical organizational ties, Lomberg arrives with an established, albeit combative, history against his new teammate Mathieu Olivier. According to The Athletic, Lomberg joked about knowing Olivier’s right fist quite well following an on-ice altercation early in the 2024-25 regular season when the Blue Jackets faced the Flames at Nationwide Arena. On November 29, 2024, tensions boiled over during a game in Columbus after Christiansen delivered a hard check to Calgary forward Andrei Kuzmenko, leading to an intense physical response from Olivier.
