Rutgers Graduates Identified as Victims Fatally Struck by NYC Subway Train
Navam Kaul and Malaika Chitre, two 24-year-old recent graduates of Rutgers University and longtime friends, were fatally struck by a Number 4 subway train at the Canal Street station in lower Manhattan at approximately 3:15 a.m. on Sunday. According to New York City Police Department sources cited by the New York Post and Daily Mail, investigators are examining whether impairment played a role while reviewing witness footage that captured the pair sitting calmly on the tracks moments before impact.
The Fatal Incident at Canal Street Station
The tragedy unfolded in the early morning hours on the tracks of the Canal Street lower Manhattan station. Video footage reviewed by authorities showed Kaul and Chitre sitting together on the path of an oncoming Number 4 train. According to police sources speaking to the New York Post, investigators believe Kaul either fell or clambered onto the tracks first. Chitre reportedly went down after him in an effort to intervene, appearing in video frames to try to pull her friend toward safety before the train struck both individuals.
The train operator applied emergency braking systems, but the stop could not be executed quickly enough to avoid the collision. Law enforcement officials have stated that while suicide has not been completely ruled out by investigators, no suicide note has been recovered at this stage of the inquiry. Detectives are also awaiting toxicology reports to determine if drugs or alcohol contributed to either individual being unaware of the approaching transit hazard.
Academic Backgrounds and Professional Paths
Both victims shared a collegiate background at Rutgers University, where they graduated in 2024. Despite pursuing different disciplines, they moved within the same social circles and shared a South Asian friend group. Rajnikant Pipalia, whose son maintained a close friendship with Kaul, told the New York Post that the two young adults had grown up in the same social world, attending local gatherings and community festivals together.
Navam Kaul grew up in Sayreville, New Jersey, where his parents relocated from Nepal approximately 30 years ago. At the time of his death, he had worked for a year and a half as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg in New York City. Friends and acquaintances noted his steady professional trajectory following his graduation from Rutgers.
Malaika Chitre hailed from Dayton, New Jersey. Following her undergraduate studies, she secured a position as a quality operations specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals in Princeton, New Jersey. Beyond her corporate role, she had recently commenced studies toward a doctorate of pharmacy at Temple University in Philadelphia. During her undergraduate tenure, she served as the scholarship coordinator for the Omega Phi Alpha National Service Sorority and worked as the public relations director for the Ashley Lauren Foundation.
Transit Safety Pressures and Infrastructure Scrutiny
The incident occurred just one week after the death of Moet McCullum, a 41-year-old construction-flagger from Brooklyn who was struck and killed by a D Train while working on the tracks near the Yankee Stadium station on September 3, 2026. Federal and local authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board and New York City Transit’s Office of System Safety, are actively investigating the systemic factors surrounding these fatalities.
