Russian Embassy in Sweden Targeted in Latest Drone Attack
Stockholm – The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Sweden was struck by a drone carrying paint on September 7th, marking the latest in a series of attacks targeting the diplomatic mission. Swedish police responded to reports of a suspicious drone over the embassy in the Kungsholmen area at 05:00 local time (06:00 Moscow time), confirming that paint was dropped onto the property.
This incident follows previous drone attacks on May 25th, June 17th, July 5th, and an attack on the Russian trade representation in Stockholm on August 21st. The embassy has characterized these events as a “systematic phenomenon” for which it holds the Swedish side responsible. Despite investigations, Swedish police have yet to identify the perpetrators or organizers of the attacks.
Police have filed a report for damage to property and violation of Aviation Law,but have not located the drone operator. The Russian embassy argues that Swedish authorities are failing to fulfill their obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. A no-fly zone was previously established over the embassy and trade representation at the joint request of Russian diplomats and Swedish police.
Earlier this year, in January, a man was detained after attempting to drive a car through the gates of the Russian embassy in Stockholm, suspected of attempting illegal entry.
