Ukraine War: Diplomatic Push Intensifies as Zelensky Signals Chance for Resolution
Geneva/Moscow – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated a heightened, though still challenging, possibility of ending the war with Russia,as a flurry of diplomatic activity unfolds. Intense negotiations are currently underway, with revised peace proposals presented to Vladimir Putin in Moscow by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner following consultations between the US and Ukraine.
The push for a resolution comes amid continued territorial disputes, notably regarding the Donbas region, where russia demands Ukraine cede control of areas it has failed to capture after four years of conflict – a demand Kyiv deems unacceptable. While Putin has maintained a firm stance, signaling a “deal now or face worse terms later” ultimatum, the recent diplomatic surge suggests a potential shift,or at least a willingness to engage in further discussion.
Initially, the US presented a 28-point draft peace plan widely perceived as favoring Moscow. Subsequent talks in Geneva and Florida led to amendments, the details of which remain undisclosed. The visit by Witkoff and Kushner to Moscow is being viewed by some, including the Russian tabloid Moskovsky Komsomolets, as a sign of an impending breakthrough.
According to Zelensky, “tough issues still have to be worked through.” The core of these issues centers on territorial control, with Russia seeking to solidify its gains in the Donbas. However, the ongoing diplomatic efforts represent a critical juncture in the conflict, potentially shaping the future of Ukraine and the broader geopolitical landscape.
