Drone Attacks Target Russian Energy and Railway Infrastructure
BELGOROD & NIZHNY NOVGOROD, RUSSIA – Overnight from Monday to Tuesday, a wave of drone attacks struck multiple regions across western Russia, impacting energy and railway infrastructure, officials reported. The attacks, which targeted areas bordering Ukraine and regions further inland, represent a significant escalation in the frequency and geographic scope of drone warfare within Russian territory.
The Russian Defense Ministry claims to have neutralized 62 drones over Belgorod and 31 over the Belgorod Oblast, alongside 36 over Nizhny Novgorod. Thes attacks come as Ukraine continues to seek ways to disrupt Russia’s war effort and demonstrate its ability to strike within Russia itself, despite ongoing air defenses. The incidents raise concerns about the vulnerability of critical infrastructure and potential disruptions to energy supplies and transportation networks.
In the Nizhny Novgorod region, east of Moscow, the industrial zone of Dzerjinsk-home to several chemical companies-was specifically targeted, according to Governor Gleb Nikitin via Telegram. Drone debris fell on a company’s territory, but officials reported no “significant harm” to infrastructure and no injuries.
The Belgorod region experienced more severe consequences.Approximately 1,000 residents were left without electricity Tuesday morning following drone strikes on energy facilities over the past two days, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov stated on Telegram. Tragically, two energy technicians were killed Monday while working to restore power, Gladkov confirmed.
The Russian Defense Ministry previously announced intercepting over 250 drones, suggesting a coordinated and widespread assault. Further assessments are underway to determine the full extent of the damage and potential long-term impacts on regional infrastructure and services.
