Kyiv, Ukraine – Russia launched a large-scale drone attack on Ukraine’s capital early this morning, injuring at least six peopel, according too Kyiv’s military management. The attack began around 6 a.m. local time and prompted widespread air raid alerts across the country. Many residents sought shelter in metro stations.
In response to the assault on Kyiv, Poland closed its airspace near the cities of Lublin and Rzeszow, and scrambled its air force.Flightradar24 reported the airspace closure was in effect until at least 4 a.m. GMT, citing “unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security.”
The Polish military stated on X (formerly Twitter) that Polish and allied aircraft were operating in its airspace as a preventative measure to secure the area and protect citizens, due to activity from Russian long-range aviation striking Ukrainian territory.
The drone attack on Kyiv is being described by autonomous monitors as one of the largest sence the start of the war in February 2022.
The events unfold as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is addressing allegations of Russian airspace violations against neighboring countries at the 80th United nations General Assembly in New York.
This follows a recent NATO air defense mission conducted over Poland in response to what were described as “unprecedented” Russian drone incursions.
