Russia Claims Control of Potapivka Village in Ukraine’s Sumy Region
Russia’s Defense Ministry announced Sunday the capture of Potapivka, a village in Ukraine’s Sumy region bordering Russia, marking a localized advance in an ongoing effort to establish a “buffer zone” along the frontier.
The ministry stated that units of the Northern grouping of forces had established control over the village, using the Russian name for the location. Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on the claim.
The seizure of Potapivka comes as Russian forces have been attempting for months to expand their presence within the Sumy region, conducting small-scale incursions across the border. Ukraine maintains its forces are successfully repelling these advances, and that Russia has not been able to secure a substantial foothold in the area.
Russia currently occupies approximately a fifth of Ukraine’s territory, having seized much of it following the launch of its full-scale invasion in 2022. Recent advances by Russian forces in February have been characterized as the slowest in nearly two years, according to analysis of data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The Moscow Times, an independent news organization, recently reported being designated as an “undesirable” organization by Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office, a move that criminalizes its work and places its staff at risk. The designation follows an earlier labeling as a “foreign agent,” and is viewed by the publication as a direct attempt to suppress independent journalism within Russia.
